Orbital context

Plots are in GSE (geocentric solar ecliptic) coordinates, so Earth is at [0,0], the Sun is at [1,0]. The plot is the projection of the orbit on the ecliptic plane.

Animated Version: Orbit_GSE_2022H2.mp4

Definition for the grey shading representing downlink rates:

  • white = maximum downlink rate at which you can empty the SSMM in ~10 days
  • light-grey = SSMM fill state decreases with everyone operating at EID-A rates
  • mid-grey = SSMM fill state increases within RSW (10 instruments operating) and decreases outside RSW (IS-only breakeven rate < downlink rate < inside-RSW breakeven rate )
  • dark-grey = SSMM fill state increases with just IS operating (downlink rate < IS-only breakeven rate)

Science and calibration planning

Note the text in red highlights adjustments still to be made in SOOP Kitchen plan during Long Term Planning

Overall objectives:

  • High-resolution observations during the second close perihelion (0.29 AU)
  • Catching an Active Region, ideally one in the western hemisphere that is more likely to be visible from Earth.
  • (Note that perihelion 2 is less likely to be good for connectivity science as there are less data available for modelling).

Coordinated science campaigns:

note closest distance 0.292au is reached on 2022-10-12 19:11

Outside RSWs

  • 2022-12-11: 3-hrs-long West-limb pointing to provide context imagery to PSP perihelion&quadrature (Note that this shows up as CALIB_OFFPOI_OOF in the plan though it is not a calibration this time around)
  • After the RSWs, starting 2022-11-07, the RS payload will run a high-quality synoptic programme to take advantage of the good data downlink (close distance to Earth).
  • From 2022-12-06 onwards, EUI replaces the nominal FSI synoptics with occulter images for few weeks when the S/C is within 10 deg of Earth's view point.

IS calibrations:

  • 2022-11-16 to 17 : MAG calibration rolls (CALIB_ROLL_MAG)

RS calibrations:

  • 2022-10-06  11:30 (before RSW4): Cross-calibration of high-resolution telescopes for co-alignment characterisation (CALIB_OFFPOI_ALIGNMENT).
Note S/C at 0.33AU so these manoeuvres are Metis-incompatible
  • Flat-field calibration for PHI/FDT and EUI/FSI (CALIB_OFFPOI_FLATFIELD) on
    • 2022-10-07 00:00 (before RSW4): 2 repetitions to simulate both a strong redshift and a strong blueshift in PHI data. EUI/FSI only takes part in first instance.
    • 2022-10-13 10:55 (during RSW4, commanded through PTR)): flatfield for PHI only, to support the perihelion observations

  1. Note that SPICE will need to switch OU heater state, inbound to and outbound from perihelion. Timings of this will depend upon analysis of temperature data from LTP-06 when will first have been done.

The (maybe) tricky  part is that this may require a gap for SPICE in the conjoined RSWs of LTP-09. Will need to discuss how to handle this, if so.

  2. Taken care of by the end of the SOWG.
